For a better experience, please enable JavaScript in your browser before proceeding. Older Savage Help Please. Thread starter deputydeer Start date Oct 24, I picked up an older Savage for My question is what kind of Savage is it. The serial Number starts with a F the scope mounts are weaver type mounts that made on to the receiver. I was also told by the guy I got the gun from it was bought between and The gun looks like it has never been shot the action is smooth and the barrel is clean.

No, you got a great deal. Walmart and Kmart both sold the Savage but I don't know anything about the serial numbers. Seems like I remember Savage marketing some with what appeared to be fixed Weaver bases in the early 90's.

The old rifles shoot quite well. I picked up a similar rifle a while back. Should be just a regular ole action and not a "J" action. Have a picture of it? Heck I would give you for just the action. I have found out that it is pre due to no letter at the beging of the serial but what year before ?

I know its a left hand. I am a lefty. But what does the H stand for in the model? And why is the serial etched in on the bolt? Its a beautful gun in really good condition. I will post better pics sometime today. Here is more pics of my new favorite gun besides my Savage. The barrel length is 24" and the stock is solid wood.

Also there is no plastic anywhere like on my left handed BDL deluxe classic pictured below. If this gun was born sometime before it didn't get used much. And if it is that old you know there wasn't many left handed models made. This gun was definitely worth what I traded it for. It deserves a nice Leupold scope for sure. Then I am going to find out what year this thing was made and what the H means in it model L-H if it take year to finally find out. Maybe these pics will help someone figure it out.

I heard people say Savage guns are ugly. I believe the pics below show other wise. Anyone else on this forum have one similar to mine? Its a Rem Its beautiful but It uses plastic heavily. No idea why the bolt is etched, bubba maybe, not factory though. It is a , I think. I've been collecting dating info on the old 's for a long time, yours is the highest serial number in my records yet. The previous number is XXX made in so I'd hazard a guess yours is as well because in they went to the A series serial numbers start with a letter.

See if you can find a small oval stamped on the barrel, this is a date code. I'll take a crazy guess and say yours has 6V stamped inside the oval. There are many different models of the series designed for different purposes.

This means that if the user wishes to re-barrel the rifle for use with a different cartridge, the bolt head can be changed to a new case head diameter. The Savage Model , designed by Nicholas L. Brewer in , has been in continuous production since that time.

I think you've done a good thing the way you've chosen to preserve and hunt the old rifle. The design has since succeeded in bringing the company back to life as one of the largest bolt-action rifle makers in America. Savage Model - Model I was hoping the experts might be able to tell me a little more information about what I have. The High Country is available in different versions that chamber 11 kinds of ammunition. When Winchester closed the New Haven Connecticut plant in , the Model secured a place in firearms history, overtaking the Winchester Model 70 as the oldest continuously manufactured bolt-action rifle in America.

Is it a wood stock or synthetic? Yes sir, It sounds like a 1st gen. See if this link helps you any. I've had it for at least 30 years, since it was given to me by a close family friend. I suspect it's at least 35 years old. It has a five digit serial number beginning with "5" and all numbers. The barrel has "Conlin" stamped on it with " underit. No "series" and it's pre as that's when they started using the letter prefix on the serial numbers. If it has a modern style bolt then it was made between and If it's the older style then it was made between and The letter indicates the year of production.

Stevens used to make a Conlin pistol back around the turn of the century but that was long before Savage bought them up.
